مبنای کار سنسور های سطح آب یا به عبارت بهتر سنسورهای شناور عمودی بسیار ساده است. شناور موجود روی این سنسور با حرکت روی لوله ی آن، با توجه به میزان سطح آب نقش سوئیچ را در مدار ایفا نماید. سنسور سوئیچ مغناطیسی سطح مایع دارای سوئیچ مغناطیسی داخلی می باشد که در صورت بالا آمدن شناور و یا پایین رفتن آن این کلید قطع و وصل می شود.زمانی که سطح مایع درون مخزن زیاد می شود، شناور متناسب با سطح آن بالا می آید و کلید خروجی را بسته به نوع سربندی وصل یا قطع می کند. بر اساس میدان مغناطیسی و سیستم مغناطیسی موجود در لوله، سوئیچ داخلی به حالت باز یا بسته در خواهد آمد. سوئیچ داخلی از نوع reed switch می باشد.
از این نوع سنسورها در کاربردهای مختلفی مانند هشدار یا کنترل سطح مایعات، اندازه گیری سطح مایعات، مانیتورینگ سطح محفظه و در محفظه های آب، قهوه، فن سردکننده آب استفاده می گردد.
